Identifying Edaphic Factors and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index Metrics Driving Wildlife Mortality From Anthrax in Kenya’s Wildlife Areas

چکیده

Anthrax, an acute disease of homeotherms caused by soil-borne Bacillus anthracis is implicated in dramatic declines wildlife mainly sub-Saharan Africa. Anthrax outbreaks are often localized space and time. Therefore, understanding predictors the spatial temporal occurrence anthrax areas useful supporting early warning improved response targeting measures to reduce impact epizootic risk on populations. Spatial localization hypothesized be driven edaphic factors, while thought extreme weather events including temperature, humidity, rainfall, drought. Here, we test role select factors normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) metrics structure climate variability patterns mortality from key Kenya over a 20-year period, 2000 2019. There was positive association between number total months reported during study period nitrogen organic carbon content soil each area. The monthly (timing) Lake Nakuru (with most intense outbreaks) positively related previous month’s heterogeneity NDVI deviation means. Generalized linear models revealed that year (intensity) NDVI, cation exchange capacity soil. These results, examined light experimental studies persistence amplification enlighten mechanisms which these driving localization.

Anthrax and wildlife.

Although livestock anthrax is declining in many parts of the world, with an increasing number of countries probably truly free of the disease, anthrax remains enzootic in many national parks and even in some game ranching areas. These infected areas can present a persistent risk to surrounding livestock, which may otherwise be free of the disease, as well as a public health risk. The authors us...

Mapping and Attributing Normalized Difference Vegetation Index Trends for Nepal

Global change affects vegetation cover and processes through multiple pathways. Long 1 time series of surface land surface properties derived from satellite remote sensing give unique 2 abilities to observe these changes, particularly in areas with complex topography and limited research 3 infrastructure. Here, we focus on Nepal, a biodiversity hotspot where vegetation productivity is 4 limited...

Climate-related vegetation characteristics derived from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) leaf area index and normalized difference vegetation index

[1] MODIS-based leaf area index (LAI) and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) are used to examine detailed information regarding actual growing season and total annual production for various regions. Overall, MODIS LAI has larger variability and demonstrates more information regarding the evolution and structure of the seasonal vegetation characteristics. In contrast, the NDVI saturat...

Towards sustainable Wildlife Management Areas in Tanzania

Within the last few years, Tanzania has witnessed mushrooming growth of “wildlife management areas” (WMAs). These are broadly meant to halt (or reduce) loss of wildlife populations, and ensure that local people benefit from their conservation. However, human pressure is rapidly increasing and causing management problems in the WMAs. Some human land-use activities also limit wildlife dispersal, ...
